Medicalnews – Depresi menjadi salah satu gangguan kesehatan mental yang paling banyak dialami masyarakat dunia. Data WHO menunjukkan bahwa sekitar 4 persen populasi global mengalami depresi. Angka ini mencakup 5,7 persen orang dewasa. Wanita memiliki prevalensi lebih tinggi yaitu 6,9 persen dibanding pria sebesar 4,6 persen.

Kelompok usia lanjut juga menghadapi risiko yang cukup besar. Lansia berusia di atas 70 tahun mencatat angka depresi sebesar 5,9 persen. WHO menyebut depresi sekitar 1,5 kali lebih sering terjadi pada wanita. Kondisi ini semakin kuat terjadi pada masa kehamilan dan pasca persalinan. Lebih dari 10 persen wanita hamil atau baru melahirkan mengalami depresi.

Depresi memberikan dampak serius terhadap kehidupan sosial. Kondisi ini memengaruhi hubungan dengan keluarga, pertemanan, serta aktivitas di sekolah dan tempat kerja. Siapa pun dapat mengalami depresi, terutama mereka yang menghadapi kekerasan, kehilangan, atau tekanan berat.

Angka bunuh diri juga memberi gambaran betapa berat dampak depresi. Pada tahun 2021, sekitar 727 ribu orang meninggal karena bunuh diri. Bunuh diri menjadi penyebab kematian ketiga pada kelompok usia 15 sampai 29 tahun.

Penelitian Identifikasi Mineral yang Berpotensi Melindungi Kesehatan Mental

Penelitian terbaru dari Universitas Xi’an Jiaotong, Tiongkok, memberikan pandangan baru terkait pencegahan gangguan mental. Peneliti menelusuri data dari hampir 200 ribu peserta UK Biobank. Seluruh peserta tidak memiliki riwayat masalah mental saat penelitian dimulai.

Peserta diminta mencatat konsumsi makanan mereka dalam beberapa periode 24 jam. Peneliti menghitung asupan mineral harian dari catatan tersebut. Selanjutnya, catatan kesehatan dipantau selama 13 tahun untuk melihat munculnya gangguan mental.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan hubungan antara mineral tertentu dan penurunan risiko depresi. Zat besi menurunkan risiko depresi sebesar 12 persen. Magnesium menurunkan risiko sebesar 9,5 persen. Selenium juga memberi perlindungan dengan menurunkan risiko sebesar 12 persen.

Penelitian juga mencatat hubungan menarik pada mineral lain. Mangan dapat menurunkan risiko bunuh diri hingga 33 persen. Sementara itu, asupan zinc yang tinggi berkaitan dengan penurunan risiko PTSD sebesar 57 persen.

Peran Mineral dalam Menjaga Suasana Hati

Para peneliti menekankan pentingnya menjaga keseimbangan asupan mineral. Mereka menulis bahwa zat besi, selenium, dan mangan dapat membantu menurunkan risiko gangguan mental umum. Namun, mereka menemukan bahwa konsumsi kalsium tinggi justru meningkatkan risiko depresi dan kecemasan.

Peneliti juga menyarankan pemenuhan asupan mineral sesuai RNI. Asupan magnesium, kalium, zinc, tembaga, dan mangan yang sesuai RNI dapat membantu mengurangi risiko gangguan suasana hati.

Efek perlindungan mineral ini tampak lebih kuat pada peserta berusia di bawah 55 tahun. Namun kondisi kesehatan seseorang tetap memengaruhi efektivitas mineral tersebut. Ketika peneliti mengecualikan peserta dengan penyakit kronis, beberapa hasil tidak lagi menunjukkan pengaruh yang signifikan. Termasuk hubungan konsumsi kalsium dengan depresi serta hubungan beberapa mineral dengan kecemasan.

Kesimpulan

Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pola makan dapat memengaruhi risiko gangguan mental. Konsumsi mineral tertentu dapat memberi perlindungan tambahan. Meski begitu, peneliti menegaskan bahwa kesehatan mental tetap dipengaruhi banyak faktor, termasuk kondisi fisik dan pengalaman hidup.
